TV Models affected:
55LE5500-UA
Different part/board numbers we service:
EBU60904803

Symptoms of a bad Main board:
Audio doesn't work on HDMI ports
HDMI ports don't work at all
TV can be turned on and off, however no back-light appears, no picture, or sound
TV turns on but picture has strange lines all all inputs and on menus
What do we fix and how do we fix it:
Nine times out of ten, we see these boards with malfunctioning CPU chips also called BGA which stands for Ball Grid Array. These chips almost always covered with a heat-sink run fairly hot. The chips are very resistant and almost never break, but after years of heating and cooling (Tv being turned on and off), microscopic cracks will form in the solder balls between the chip and the board. These cracks, will prevent data from going through and thus malfunctions will occur.
So how do we fix it? :
Here at Nick's TV repair we will fully remove the chip from the board and remove all the old solder on the chip and the board. Once all cleaned up, we will rework the chip with higher quality solder. The solder we use as apposed to the factory standard solder, is made with softer metals which is more malleable. This means they are less prone to cracking over the years.
Beware of the cheaper repair services!
You will notice that most "repair centers" will only offer somewhere between 30-60 day warranties, and the bolder companies up to 90 days. The reason for this is simple, they don't do the job correctly. They perform what we call a re-flow. They do not remove the chip, or replace the old solder with new one. They simply put the board either under a heat lamp, or in an oven at just the right temperature to remelt the solder spheres under the board. This will temporarily reform some of the broken contacts between the board and the chip. These contacts will not be strong and are prone to breaking within months of use. This is why the warranty period is so short.
